Threshing is the mechanical separation of edible grain kernels from the inedible plant material, husks, and stems that surround them after harvest. A thresher subject the cut crop to impact, friction, or a combination of both, forcing the grain to break free from the chaff so it can be winnowed away in a second step. This is essential processing, not optional: grain cannot be milled, stored reliably, or sold until threshed.

Early threshing was done by hand with flails, or by driving livestock across laid grain on a threshing floor. Mechanical threshers appeared in the late 18th century and evolved rapidly. A stationary thresher typically uses a rotating cylinder or beater bar, often spiked or barred, to strike grain bundles fed into it by hand or conveyor. Modern combines perform threshing in the field as part of harvesting. The grain must impact hard enough to fracture the bond between kernel and hull, but not so hard that the grain itself shatters into fragments unsuitable for milling.

The process works because grain kernels are harder and denser than the chaff surrounding them. Impact causes chaff to break into smaller fragments that separate easily, while whole kernels survive intact. Small grains like wheat, barley, and oats thresh cleanly; legumes like beans require gentler treatment. Moisture content matters: grain at 15 to 20 percent moisture threshes far more efficiently than very dry grain, which becomes brittle and prone to cracking, or very wet grain, which clogs the mechanism.

Thresher design varies by crop and scale. Conventional stationary threshers use a cylinder and concave arrangement with specific spacing and speed settings for each grain type. Rotary combines employ a different principle, using axial flow through a rotating cage where friction and impact work together. The chaff and broken straw are discharged continuously while grain falls through sieves into a collection hopper.

Common problems in threshing include incomplete separation, leaving grain still attached to straw; excessive grain damage from cylinder speeds set too high; and poor grain quality due to mixing with dirt or debris. Grain samples from the thresher outlet should be inspected for threshing losses, foreign material, and damage before continuing operation.
