Tanging is the practice of striking metal objects, usually pans or kettles, together with loud repetitive clanging to induce a honeybee swarm to settle and cluster. When a colony divides and departs the hive, the bees fly as a loose mass searching for a new home. The persistent noise appears to interrupt their navigation or signal safety, causing them to land on a nearby branch or object where the beekeeper can contain them in a hive or skep.
The mechanics are straightforward: a beekeeper produces sustained, high-decibel metallic noise by striking two items repeatedly while standing near or under the swarm's flight path. The sound must be loud enough to carry to flying bees at height, typically 30 to 50 feet, and maintained for several minutes. Tin, brass, or iron implements work well; the goal is volume and clarity rather than musical tone. Domestic pots, old pans, or purpose-made tanging implements all serve the function.
Why tanging actually works
The accepted explanation is that noise mimics the piping signals the queen bee produces inside the hive, or that it masks orientation cues bees use to maintain formation. Either way, swarms that hear tanging often break their flight pattern and descend within minutes. Success is not guaranteed and depends on swarm size, wind, and how recently the bees departed. Some swarms ignore tanging entirely; others land so quickly the beekeeper must scramble to position equipment.
Tanging is now largely obsolete in commercial beekeeping, where swarms are anticipated, prevented through hive management, or captured by trained personnel with nets and equipment. The practice survives mainly in small-scale and traditional apiculture, and as a recognizable image of rural beekeeping culture. The term itself is dated, preserved in beekeeping literature and oral tradition rather than in current practice manuals. Modern beekeepers more often rely on swarm traps, pheromone lures, or careful colony splitting to manage reproduction.
