MPO: the scheduled check that keeps aircraft legal to fly

MPO stands for Maintenance Planning Document, not Mercury Planetary Orbiter. It is the master scheduling tool that dictates every inspection, service, and overhaul an aircraft must undergo throughout its operational life. Airlines and maintenance providers use the MPO to plan labor, parts inventory, and hangar time months or years in advance, ensuring compliance with airworthiness requirements.

The MPO is generated by the aircraft manufacturer and tailored to the specific model and operator. It lists maintenance tasks by flight hour, flight cycle (takeoff and landing), or calendar interval, whichever comes first. An MPO might specify that landing gear seals be inspected every 500 flight hours, that engines be overhauled every 20,000 cycles, or that certain systems be functionally tested every 24 months. The document also notes which tasks require the aircraft to be removed from service and for how long.

MPO intervals are not negotiable suggestions. They are derived from manufacturer analysis, regulatory authority (FAA, EASA, or equivalent) certification data, and historical failure patterns. Missing a scheduled item can ground an aircraft until the work is completed. Airlines face significant penalties if an aircraft operates beyond its last due maintenance. The cost of deferring scheduled work to squeeze out more flight time far exceeds the cost of performing it on schedule.

In practice, maintenance schedulers plot MPO requirements against projected utilization, creating a maintenance roadmap. A narrow-body airliner might enter a heavy check every 18 to 24 months; a cargo aircraft might need more frequent teardowns. Unexpected failures (unscheduled maintenance) are absorbed into this framework, but they do not override the MPO mandate. Many operators build buffer time into schedules to handle the inevitable discovery of hidden corrosion, cracks, or component wear when access is gained during planned checks.

The MPO is distinct from the aircraft's Technical Log, which records actual maintenance performed, and from regulatory audit trails, which verify compliance. Modern aircraft data systems feed actual flight hours and cycles back to the MPO, triggering electronic alerts when maintenance is due. Misalignment between the MPO schedule and actual work performed is one of the leading findings in regulatory audits and accident investigations.
