The time interval between the instant a request for service is received from a user and the instant of final release of all facilities by the user or either of two users.

Operating time is the duration from when a user initiates a request for service until all system resources are released and the transaction is complete. In electrical systems and telecommunications, this interval directly affects throughput, cost allocation, and equipment duty cycles. For a switching system, it begins when a call is placed or a circuit is requested and ends when the final connection is dropped and the circuit becomes available for the next user.

The term carries different weight depending on context. In telecom exchanges, operating time determines billing intervals and helps operators track system load. In industrial control systems, it measures the duration a motor, valve, or other device runs under load. In data centers, operating time of servers and power distribution equipment feeds into uptime calculations and maintenance scheduling. Utilities use it to evaluate duty cycles for generators, transformers, and circuit breakers.

Measuring and Recording

Operating time is typically logged by the equipment itself or by external monitoring hardware. Mechanical counters, digital displays, and automated data collection systems all record this metric. The precision required depends on the application: a generator's running hours might be tracked to the nearest hour, while a high-speed switching system might timestamp transactions to milliseconds. Accuracy matters because operating time becomes the basis for maintenance intervals, warranty claims, and regulatory compliance records.

One practical complication is distinguishing between connected time and actual processing time. A user might hold a line open without active data transfer; some definitions include this idle period, others do not. Similarly, in electrical systems, the moment power is applied may differ from when the device begins useful work. Standards bodies define operating time differently across industries, so specification documents must be consulted.

Operating time sits at the intersection of performance measurement, cost recovery, and maintenance planning. It is not the same as calendar time or availability; a device can be available but not operating. For equipment under warranty or service contracts, accumulated operating time often determines when maintenance or replacement is required, making accurate measurement essential to both user and service provider.
