A ram is an intact adult male sheep, kept primarily for breeding. On farms and in flocks, the ram's genetic contribution determines wool quality, meat yield, growth rate, and disease resistance across the entire herd. A single ram may service 30 to 50 ewes (females) during the breeding season, making his selection one of the highest-leverage decisions a farmer makes.
Rams are sorted by breed: Merino rams produce fine wool suitable for textiles; Suffolk and Hampshire rams grow large frames for meat production; Dorper rams are hardy in arid regions. Breeders evaluate rams by phenotype (muscle, bone density, fleece crimping) and increasingly by genetic markers. A premium ram can cost several thousand pounds, while a commercial ram might sell for a few hundred. The animal's age matters: young rams (hoggets) are often preferred for their vigor, though mature rams (three to five years old) may have proven offspring records.
Management demands are specific. Rams must be condition-scored regularly to ensure adequate body fat without obesity; thin rams become sterile, while overweight rams struggle with mobility during mating. They require separate paddocks from the main flock except during the controlled breeding season. A ram's feet, teeth, and testicles are checked systematically before use. Rams are naturally aggressive and can injure handlers; they should be moved with respect for their weight and horn configurations.
Beyond the animal
The term 'ram' also names the hydraulic cylinder used in industrial presses and heavy machinery. In this context, the parallel is purely etymological: the device's piston head resembles the animal's horned skull, striking or driving forcefully. This industrial ram operates at pressures from 100 to 350 bar, depending on application. The confusion is rare in practice because context makes the meaning clear.
In flock management, a ram's productive lifespan is typically four to six years before age or injury removes him from service. Farmers keep detailed pedigree records and increasingly use semen from high-genetic-merit rams for artificial insemination, reducing physical strain on valuable animals and allowing genetics to be spread across multiple flocks.
