Over square: bore wider than the piston travels
An over square engine has a cylinder bore diameter larger than the distance the piston travels up and down inside it, called the stroke. If bore is 85 mm and stroke is 80 mm, the engine is over square. This geometry directly affects how the engine breathes, revs, and performs.
Over square engines can spin faster than their square or undersquare counterparts because shorter stroke means less distance for the piston to travel. Maximum piston speed remains a physical limit, so a shorter stroke lets the crankshaft turn higher revolutions per minute before the piston speed becomes destructive. This is why high-revving sports engines tend toward over square proportions. A 2.0 litre over square four-cylinder might safely turn 8000 rpm, while an undersquare engine of similar displacement might be limited to 5500 rpm.
Design trade-offs
The wider bore allows larger valves and more fuel-air mixture to enter and exit the chamber, improving breathing at high rpm. However, wider bores also mean taller cylinder blocks, which increases overall engine height and weight. The combustion chamber becomes wider and shallower, which can hurt flame propagation and efficiency at low speeds. Cooling becomes less uniform across a wide bore.Fuel consumption and low-end torque often suffer in over square engines because the short stroke generates less leverage on the crankshaft. Maximum torque typically arrives later in the rev range. For engines designed primarily for highway cruising, this penalty in low-rpm performance matters. Racing and performance applications accept this trade-off eagerly.
Manufacturers use displacement, bore, and stroke figures to describe an engine mathematically. A bore and stroke are so fundamental to engine character that enthusiasts and engineers refer to them constantly when comparing designs. The terms square, over square, and undersquare quickly communicate the fundamental character of an engine: over square means high rpm capability; undersquare means low-end torque.
