Over the top: spray applied directly downward onto crops

Over the top refers to pesticide or herbicide application delivered by spraying directly downward onto the foliage and upper surfaces of growing plants in the field. This is the most common route of chemical administration in field agriculture, distinguished from soil incorporation, seed treatment, or chemigation (application through irrigation water). The spray typically originates from boom-mounted nozzles on a tractor or self-propelled sprayer traveling between crop rows at heights of 15 to 24 inches above the plant canopy.

The term originated from the literal direction of spray travel: material goes over the top of the plants rather than underneath or through the soil profile. Early sprayers were designed to deliver material from above to maximize coverage of exposed leaf surfaces where many insects feed and where fungal diseases establish. The phrase persists in modern agricultural practice despite the existence of more technically descriptive terms like foliar application.

Over the top application works well for contact herbicides, insecticides targeting above-ground pests, and protective fungicides because chemical retention on leaf surfaces is essential for efficacy. However, systemic products that require root uptake perform poorly when applied over the top, unless formulated with surfactants and adjuvants that promote leaf penetration and translocation. Timing matters critically: spray must contact foliage when it is dry, and rain within 30 minutes to a few hours after application can wash off unabsorbed material depending on the product chemistry.

Coverage challenges and drift

Complete coverage of all leaf surfaces is difficult at practical boom heights and speeds. Dense canopies develop shading where lower leaves receive little spray, while over the top application cannot reach soil-level weeds or insects once crop height exceeds 12 inches. Spray drift to adjacent fields or non-target areas is a major concern with over the top methods, particularly with fine droplets from hydraulic nozzles or air-assisted equipment used in high winds.

Modern over the top programs depend on accurate droplet sizing, appropriate adjuvant selection, and correct nozzle choice. Coarse droplets reduce drift but increase the risk of poor coverage; fine droplets improve coverage but drift farther. Growers must balance these constraints against weather windows, crop stage, and pest pressure to determine whether over the top application remains the best choice for a given chemical and field condition.
