Paper clay is a workable ceramic mixture that combines ball clay, earthenware, or stoneware clay with shredded cellulose fibres, typically from recycled paper or cotton linter. The fibres occupy roughly 10 to 30 percent of the dry volume. When formed and fired, the organic matter burns away completely between 300 and 600 degrees Celsius, leaving a fired ceramic with a network of tiny voids where the fibres once were.

The chief advantage is structural: the green (unfired) body becomes dramatically less prone to cracking and warping. A large hand-built vessel or sculpture that would split during drying in conventional clay can be constructed in paper clay without the slow drying schedules and careful management normally required. The fired ceramic itself is also lighter and more porous than the equivalent solid clay body, and less likely to explode or shatter during the kiln firing if moisture becomes trapped inside.

Paper clay handles much like standard clay for wheel-throwing, hand-building, and slab work, though the fibre content makes it somewhat less plastic and slightly grainier under the hands. Joining pieces together is easier because the fibres mechanically interlock at the interface when leather-hard sections are scored and slipped together. The downside is that the porosity of the fired work may be unsuitable for functional ware that must hold liquids without sealing, unless the piece is glazed adequately on the interior.

Production and cost

Paper clay is typically prepared on-site by potters and studios rather than sold as a commodity clay body. A potter mixes a standard clay base with mechanically shredded paper (often from office waste or newspaper) or with commercial cellulose fibres sold in small quantities. The mixing is labour-intensive and requires equipment such as a clay mixer or pugmill to achieve even fibre distribution. Some manufacturers do supply ready-mixed paper clay, but the material commands a price premium and has a limited shelf life once wetted because the fibres can begin to decompose.

Paper clay became widespread in studio ceramics during the 1990s and is now standard practice for sculptural and large-form work. Industrial production of ceramic vessels and architectural elements has adopted it selectively, particularly for large tiles, facade panels, and decorative pieces where weight reduction and crack resistance justify the added handling complexity. It remains less common in tableware and high-fire reduction stoneware, where traditional clay bodies and firing schedules are entrenched.
