Raku

A style of Japanese pottery, considered the traditional style for the pottery used in the Japanese tea ceremony; (especially capitalized) such pottery made by the Raku family.

Raku is a ceramic ware fired at around 1000, 1100°C, a significantly lower temperature than stoneware or porcelain. The technique originated in 16th-century Kyoto and became deeply associated with the Japanese tea ceremony, where bowls, cups, and vessels needed to feel warm in the hand and bear visible marks of individual craft. The Raku family, potters beginning with Chojiro in the 1580s, formalized the style and lent their name to the category.

The pottery is typically hand-thrown or hand-built rather than wheel-turned to precision. Forms are often asymmetrical, with thick walls and unglazed rims. The clay body is porous and relatively fragile compared to higher-fired ware. Glazes are usually lead-based, applied thickly, and sometimes left to run or crack deliberately during cooling. The surface finish is matt or satin, rarely glossy.

The defining feature of traditional raku is the post-firing extraction process. Once the glaze matures at peak temperature, the still-glowing piece is removed from the kiln with tongs and placed directly into a reduction chamber, historically sawdust, leaves, or other combustible material. This rapid cooling and oxygen starvation darkens the glaze, creates distinctive crackle patterns in the glaze layer, and can turn exposed clay body black or copper-grey. The shock of thermal stress demands clay bodies with high grog content to prevent cracking.

Production and variation

Modern raku potters in Japan, the United States, and Europe use gas or electric kilns that reach raku temperature quickly. Reduction methods vary: some use metal cans filled with organic matter, others use sawdust pits. The result is never entirely predictable; color and glaze texture depend on kiln atmosphere, material choice, extraction timing, and cooling speed. Pieces emerge from reduction warm and often require careful handling as the clay is still somewhat soft.

Raku is not food-safe. The porous body absorbs liquids and the lead-based glazes can leach. In Japan, raku bowls for tea remain functional for ceremony but are handled with respect for their fragility. Industrial potters rarely use raku methods because the low temperature, hand labor, and unpredictable results make mass production impractical. It remains a studio ceramic technique valued for its expressive potential and historical significance.
