The extraction of an ore from a mine, or of a metal from an ore
recovery: how much ore or metal you actually get out
Recovery in mining means the proportion of valuable material you successfully extract and process, expressed as a percentage. If a mine contains 100 tonnes of ore grading 5% copper, theoretical maximum recovery is 5 tonnes of pure copper. In practice, you will lose material at every stage: grinding reduces particle size but some ore stays locked in rock; flotation concentrates the valuable mineral but leaves some in the tailings; smelting and refining introduce further losses. A typical copper operation might achieve 85% to 95% recovery from ore to finished metal, meaning 5 to 15% of the copper present never reaches the final product.
Recovery is measured differently depending on the stage. Ore recovery describes how much ore is successfully extracted from the mine itself, accounting for material left in pillars, dilution from waste rock, and losses during loading and transport. Metal recovery or metallurgical recovery tracks the metal content through concentration and refining. A mine might recover 92% of the ore in place but only 88% of the contained metal, because the concentration and smelting processes are not perfect.
Small improvements in recovery have enormous financial impact. In a large operation processing thousands of tonnes daily, a 1% improvement in recovery can mean tens of thousands of dollars additional revenue per day. This drives investment in better grinding mills, improved flotation reagents, higher-temperature smelting, and recycling of dust and precipitates. Conversely, poor recovery is a sign of equipment wear, operator error, or incorrect process parameters, and forces investigation and adjustment.
Recovery varies sharply by ore type and metal. Gold recovery from heap leaching might be 60 to 80%, but gravity separation can reach 95% or higher. Nickel laterite processing typically achieves 75% to 85% metal recovery. Recovery also depends on the grade of the ore: low-grade deposits often have lower metallurgical recovery because the ore mineralogy is more complex and finely disseminated. Environmental regulations also affect recovery targets, because aggressive recovery methods can generate excessive waste or pollution.
The term recovery is also used in environmental remediation and tailings management. Secondary recovery describes extracting metal from old tailings dumps using modern methods. Some operations now achieve 40% to 60% recovery of previously discarded material, which improves project economics while reducing the environmental footprint of historical mining.
