A carrier is a chemically inert or nearly inert substance, typically liquid or gas, that transports and disperses an active ingredient through a process or system. The carrier itself does little or no work; its job is to move something else into position, onto a surface, or into a volume where that something else can perform its function. Common carriers include water, mineral oil, propylene glycol, compressed air, and liquefied petroleum gas.
In coating applications, a solvent carrier holds paint pigments and resins in suspension and keeps them flowing smoothly through spray equipment or onto substrates. As the carrier evaporates, the pigment and binder remain behind as a dried film. In agricultural chemicals, carriers distribute pesticides or herbicides evenly across crops; crop oil concentrates and water are standard carriers. In industrial cleaning, aqueous carriers dissolve and suspend soils so they can be removed during washdown or immersion processes.
Carrier selection and performance issues
The choice of carrier depends on the active ingredient's solubility, the application method, environmental conditions, and cost. A carrier that works for one formulation may cause separation, precipitation, or foaming in another. Volatile carriers evaporate fast but can create vapor hazards in enclosed spaces; viscous carriers cling to surfaces but may not penetrate porous materials. Incompatibility between carrier and substrate or equipment can cause corrosion, swelling, or clogging. Viscosity and surface tension of the carrier influence spray atomization, coverage uniformity, and runoff behavior.
In adhesive manufacturing, the carrier holds glue solids or resins at a pumpable consistency until use, at which point evaporation or chemical reaction hardens the bond. In pharmaceutical or cosmetic manufacture, the carrier must meet purity and stability standards; water, ethanol, and glycerin are tightly controlled. In powder coating, powder particles themselves sometimes use an electrostatic charge rather than a liquid carrier, but liquid systems rely on solvents or oils to aid application and flow-out.
The term reflects the carrier's passive role: it is a medium of transport and delivery, not an active ingredient. Understanding carrier properties is essential for troubleshooting application defects, managing evaporation rates, meeting regulatory requirements around volatile organic compounds, and ensuring product shelf stability. Selecting the wrong carrier can cause product failure in the field even when the active ingredient is sound.
