A pocket-hole jig is a clamping fixture that holds a workpiece at a fixed angle, typically 15 degrees, while guiding a drill bit to bore angled holes near the edge of a board. These holes, called pocket holes, allow screws to be driven through one piece into an adjacent piece while remaining hidden from view when the assembly is complete. The jig ensures consistent hole depth, angle, and spacing across multiple repetitions, making it standard equipment for frame-and-panel work, cabinet assembly, and face-frame construction.

Most pocket-hole jigs clamp to the edge of a board using a cam lever or screw clamp, positioning the workpiece so the drill bit enters at the correct angle. The jig body contains a hardened steel bushing that guides the bit and a depth collar that stops the drill at a preset distance, typically 1.25 to 1.5 inches from the surface. Common models accommodate boards between 0.5 and 1.5 inches thick, though some heavy-duty versions handle thicker stock. The jig itself requires a cordless drill or portable drill press; the operator indexes the jig along the edge between holes using marked positions or built-in spacing guides.

Pocket hole strategy and fastening

Once drilled, each pocket hole receives a specialized pocket screw, which has a shank diameter smaller than the hole diameter. This clearance allows the screw to slide through the pocket without binding. As the screw threads engage the adjoining board, it pulls the joint tight. The pocket screw head sits inside the countersunk pocket hole where it is invisible from the exterior; the face remains flat and unmarked. A typical pocket hole accepts a 1.25-inch or 1.5-inch pocket screw, depending on the jig design and board thickness.

Pocket-hole joinery produces a strong mechanical connection quickly and without visible hardware or traditional mortising and tenoning. It works well in softwoods, hardwoods, and engineered panels, though tear-out or splitting can occur if bit speed is too high or wood grain is unfavorable. The method is not suitable for high-stress structural joints but is adequate for casework, trim, and assembly work where appearance matters and wood movement is limited. Furniture builders often pocket-hole face frames to cabinet boxes, assemble shelving units, and join edge-banded components.

The term pocket hole originates from the small countersunk recess, or pocket, that houses the screw head. Early versions required careful layout and hand drilling; modern jigs standardized the process and reduced setup time. The pocket-hole jig remains a commodity tool in production woodworking shops and in smaller studios because it demands minimal training, produces repeatable results, and requires no expensive machinery.
