A potato spinner is a single-axle implement dragged behind a tractor that mechanically excavates potatoes and separates them from soil in one pass. The core working part is a rotating cage or wheel fitted with curved tines or spokes, typically 3 to 6 feet wide, that digs beneath the crop row and lifts the potato plant and soil mass upward. As this mass enters the cage, centrifugal force throws loose soil outward while potatoes and the plant fall onto a trailing conveyor or shaker bed where they tumble onto the ground behind the machine.
The machine is invaluable for volumes of 20 acres or more. A single spinner operator can lift a potato row in seconds; hand digging that same distance takes hours. Modern versions mount to a tractor's three-point linkage and use the PTO (power take-off) shaft to drive the spinning mechanism at 300 to 500 revolutions per minute. Older horse-drawn or ground-driven models used ground wheels to rotate the cage as the implement was pulled forward, which limited speed but required no power source.
Soil conditions and loss
Performance hinges on soil moisture and texture. Clay-heavy soils that cling to tubers will clog the tines and require operator intervention; sandy loam lets soil fall through cleanly. Wet soil is worse than dry, as compacted clods wrap around spokes and prevent normal separation. A spinner left in the field after harvest can corrode badly; tines rust, welds crack, and bearings seize within one season if not stored under cover.
The name is literal: the spoked wheel spins. The device evolved in the 1920s and 1930s in European potato-belt regions, replacing the horse-drawn hoe and hand labor. It remains a workhorse on family farms and contract harvesting operations across temperate climates. Larger operations use full potato combines, which add conveying and bagging, but a spinner with a trailer costs far less and is easier to maintain.
Operators must keep hands and loose clothing clear of the spinning cage; contact with rotating tines causes serious laceration. The machine also throws stones and clods backward at speed, so bystanders should stand well clear. Spinners designed for narrow European rows (20 to 30 inches) perform poorly on wide American spacing; row width and implement width must match or soil will spill sideways.
