Prospecting is the systematic search for economic mineral deposits or ore bodies in unmapped or understudied ground. A prospector physically surveys terrain, collects rock and soil samples, and uses portable instruments to detect ore-grade concentrations of metals or minerals before any major investment in extraction infrastructure. This fieldwork answers a basic question: is there enough of the right stuff here to justify opening a mine?

The methods vary by target. Hard-rock prospectors for gold or base metals walk drainage basins and ridgelines, panning stream sediment to detect downstream ore sources, then tracing the signal upslope. Drilling companies conduct shallow percussion or rotary drilling programs to test geological formations at depth. Geochemical prospecting involves analyzing soil, stream water, or vegetation for trace elements that point to buried mineralization. Geophysical methods like magnetic surveys, ground-penetrating radar, or induced polarization map subsurface conductivity patterns that correlate with certain ore types. Most projects use a combination: initial grassroots sampling followed by deeper drilling where samples are strongest.

The term originates from the idea of looking forward or outward (Latin prospectare), reflecting the explorer's mindset. Unlike exploration, which is the broader scientific study of an area's geology, prospecting is the applied hunt for economic rock. It sits between casual surface observation and formal resource estimation. A prospect becomes a property when a company stakes claims and begins the transition to an exploration program.

Common pitfalls include sampling bias, where prospectors preferentially collect visible mineralization and miss the broader picture, and extrapolating too much from a handful of samples in difficult terrain. Weather, access, and thick vegetation can leave large gaps in coverage. Experienced prospectors develop an eye for host rock type, color changes, and weathering patterns that signal ore, but skill and luck both matter. What looks promising in one valley may be a false signal created by local soil chemistry or glacial transport.

The cost of prospecting ranges from a single person with a pan and hammer to multicrew drilling programs running thousands of dollars per day. Small-scale artisanal and alluvial mining in developing regions relies heavily on informal prospecting; industrial companies use prospecting to screen thousands of square kilometers of claim ground and funnel capital only into the most promising targets. A productive prospect might yield drill results showing 1 to 3 grams of gold per tonne of rock or 2 to 5 percent copper, metrics that justify moving to the exploration and pre-feasibility stage.
