Quartersaw: Cutting with the grain, not across it
Most people saw wood however the blade falls, but woodworkers cut radially toward the tree's heart to stop warping.
To most people, sawing is sawing. You push a blade through wood and get smaller pieces. Direction hardly matters if the blade is sharp and straight. But woodworkers, especially those working with solid lumber for furniture or trim, think about the grain structure the way a mason thinks about brick courses.
Quartersawing means cutting the log radially: from the outer edge toward the heart, perpendicular to the growth rings. Imagine the log as a circle with concentric rings. A standard tangential saw (the typical mill cut) runs parallel to the rings, following the easiest path through the wood. A quartersaw cuts across those rings at a steep angle. The result is visible medial rays, those radial lines that run from the heart outward, which emerge as decorative flecks in hardwoods like oak or sycamore. More importantly, quartersawed boards stay flat. Because you have cut with the grain structure rather than against it, the wood shrinks more uniformly, and cupping and warping that plague tangential-sawn boards become much rarer.
The trade-off is brutal. Quartersawing wastes enormous amounts of wood. A log that would yield many boards when run through a sawmill tangentially produces far fewer usable pieces when cut radially. The cost is high, the yield is low, and the process is labor-intensive. For this reason, quartersawed lumber commands a premium and appears mainly in high-end cabinetry, antique restoration, or work where stability and appearance are worth the expense.
The term itself comes from the medieval notion of dividing the log into four quarters and then cutting each quarter radially. Modern commercial quartersawing is more complex (methods like rift-sawing and live-sawing approximate the result more efficiently), but the name stuck and the principle remains: cut toward the heart, not around it.
