Raking fire is the controlled removal of dead vegetation, leaf litter, small branches, and other combustible debris from forest floors and slopes to interrupt the path a wildfire would travel. Unlike broadcast burning, which applies heat intentionally, raking fire relies on physical removal of the fuel itself, making it slower work but more controllable in sensitive areas near structures or protected ecosystems.

The work typically happens in two phases. First, crews use brush cutters or chainsaws to fell small trees and dense shrub growth down to ground level. Then, handheld fire rakes or mechanical rakes drag the cut material into windrows (long piles) along contour lines. The windrows may be chipped, hauled away, or in some cases burned later under controlled conditions when weather permits. On steep terrain, raking follows the contours rather than straight lines down the slope, which slows water runoff and reduces erosion risk.

Variants depend on scale and terrain. Hand raking dominates on slopes steeper than about 25 degrees or in areas too rough for machinery. Wider, more open ground allows tractor-mounted rakes or rotary hoes that shred and churn material in place rather than piling it. Some operations use air curtain destructors to burn windrows on-site, collapsing the debris into ash.

The term fire rake itself describes the tool: a long handle with multiple tines or a wide head that combs loose material toward the worker. Early versions resembled oversized garden rakes. Modern designs vary by application, from light aluminum hand tools weighing 3 to 5 pounds for surface litter to heavy pull-behind implements towed behind all-terrain vehicles.

Raking fire reduces fire intensity primarily by removing the fine fuels (material under 3 millimeters diameter) that ignite easily and carry flame rapidly. Dead leaves, twigs, and resinous debris are the main targets. It cannot remove large fallen logs or deeply rooted stumps, so results depend on combining raking with thinning of standing trees and selective felling of ladder fuels (shrubs and lower branches that allow fire to climb into canopies). Poorly maintained firebreaks can revegetate and become useless within two to three years, making it a recurring cost in active fire management.

This work is labor intensive and accounts for a significant portion of fuel reduction budgets on public and private forest lands. Seasonal timing matters: raking in late summer or early fall targets the driest conditions and removes fuel before the fire season peak. Worker safety includes awareness of unstable slopes, falling hazards during cutting operations, and the physical strain of repetitive raking on steep ground. The work is often contracted through forestry companies or performed by crews from natural resource agencies.
