A waterbomber is a fixed-wing aircraft equipped with internal or external tanks to collect and deploy large volumes of water or fire retardant over active wildfires. Unlike ground crews, waterbombers can reach terrain inaccessible by road and deliver suppressant where flames threaten structures, infrastructure, or personnel. The aircraft carries payloads ranging from 800 to 3,000 US gallons depending on type, making multiple drops across a fire perimeter before returning to reload.
Two main variants dominate wildfire operations. Purpose-built air tankers, such as the Erickson S-64 Aircrane or the Bombardier CL-415, are designed from the outset for water delivery and feature rapid-fill systems that can scoop water from lakes or reservoirs while skimming the surface at low altitude. Converted aircraft, such as retired military transports fitted with retardant tanks, offer lower acquisition cost but require longer ground turnaround times for refilling at established bases.
Retardant versus water
Waterbombers drop either plain water or thickened fire retardant. Retardant contains gelling agents, iron oxide colorant, and flame-inhibiting chemicals; it slows fuel consumption and reduces fire intensity more effectively than water alone, but requires more infrastructure for mixing and loading. Water is heavier and cheaper, suitable for direct attack on active flame in heavy timber or structural fires. Pilot skill determines drop accuracy within metres, critical when working near populated areas or steep terrain where wind shear and updraft are severe.
The term waterbomber emerged in aerial firefighting jargon during the 1950s when surplus military aircraft were first adapted for civilian fire suppression. The word captures both the vessel and the action, distinguishing the aircraft from ground equipment like pumps or hoses. In formal documentation, it may be called an air tanker, aerial suppression platform, or simply tanker, though regional usage varies across Australia, Canada, and the United States.
Waterbomber operations depend on coordination with incident commanders, weather reporting, and fuel logistics. Aircraft typically operate during daylight and in visual flight conditions because precision dropping at 500 to 1,000 feet altitude demands clear sightlines. Fatigue, mechanical wear from corrosive retardant residue, and the physical demands of low-level flying at high weight impose strict operational limits and maintenance schedules.
