Recovery: extraction, not retrieval

In everyday speech, recovery means getting something back. On a mine, it means pulling something out for the first time.

To most people, recovery means restoration: you recover from illness, recover a stolen bicycle, recover your composure. The word carries a sense of return, of making whole again something that was lost or broken.

In mining and extraction, recovery has no such backward glance. It means the removal and separation of ore from rock, or of metal from ore. When a mining engineer speaks of copper recovery in a flotation plant, they mean the percentage of copper metal successfully extracted from the crushed ore and concentrated in the final product. A recovery rate of 85 percent means that of all the copper present in the feed material, 85 percent ends up in the concentrate; the rest is waste. Recovery is purely forward motion: taking what is bound in the earth and getting it out and useful.

The divergence runs deeper than vocabulary. In everyday English, recovery implies something pre-existing and valuable that must be found again. In mining, the valuable thing is already found (the ore body is known), and recovery is the technical challenge of economically liberating it. A mine's profitability often hinges on recovery efficiency: if you can extract 95 percent of the metal instead of 80 percent, you change the project from marginal to viable.

Industrial electronics borrowed the term differently. Frame-alignment recovery time measures how quickly receiving equipment locks onto a valid signal after losing synchronization. Here, recovery does mean return to a prior working state, but the term itself carries the mining sense of extraction and isolation: pulling the good signal out of noise. The word works in both contexts because both involve separation, but mining recovery is about first extraction while electronics recovery is about restoration.
