row up: creating furrows and planting in lines

To row up is to cut parallel furrows into soil and place seed or seedlings into them, typically using a mechanical planter or cultivator. The term describes both the earthwork and the seeding action as a single operation, common enough that operators and farmers use it as shorthand for the complete task. The furrows themselves become the rows that structure the field for the growing season.

A row-up operation begins with a plow, lister, or dedicated planter that breaks the soil into a ridge or furrow pattern. Spacing between rows depends on the crop: corn typically rows up at 30 to 36 inches center-to-center, soybeans at 15 to 30 inches, and vegetables anywhere from 12 to 48 inches depending on the species and harvest method. The depth of the furrow must match seed size and soil moisture, usually between 1 and 3 inches for field crops.

Mechanical planters combine the row-up function with metering and depositing: a coulter or opener cuts the furrow, a seed cup or vacuum disk meters individual seeds or clusters, and a closing wheel or chain harrows soil back over the seed. Modern planters can achieve 4 to 6 miles per hour and handle multiple rows simultaneously. Tractor-mounted units dominate field-scale work, while hand-held or walk-behind tools serve market gardens and small farms.

Why row up and not just broadcast or drill? Rows allow inter-row cultivation to control weeds without damaging the crop, simplify thinning and hand-harvest access, and make mechanical harvesting practical. The visible ridge or line of growth also makes field management and inventory easier to track across seasons.

Common failures include skipped seeds (worn seed disks, moisture-swollen seeds), uneven depth (worn openers, hydraulic drift, soil compaction), and germination loss if soil closes too loosely or too tight over the seed. Row spacing drift matters: a 1-inch error per mile can lose 5 to 10 percent of yield in some crops due to inter-plant competition.
