Rowiness is the bunching or clumping of fibers into visible, raised lines across the width of a woven or knitted fabric. These rows appear as parallel ridges or cordlike streaks that break the surface flatness and uniformity of the cloth. The condition degrades both the visual appearance and tactile quality of the finished textile, making it unsuitable for apparel or finished goods that demand consistent hand and drape.

Rowiness most commonly occurs during the finishing stages of fabric production, particularly during dyeing, wet processing, or calendering. When cloth moves through steam chambers, drying equipment, or compaction rollers under uneven tension or unequal heat distribution, fibers in one area compress or relax differently than adjoining areas. Mechanical damage from folding, handling, or improper support during wet stages can also cause fibers to migrate and cluster. In knitted goods, rowiness often signals problems with yarn feed tension or needle bed alignment during knit formation.

Detection and common causes

Rowiness becomes apparent during quality inspection when the fabric is laid flat and viewed under standard light. Running a hand across the surface reveals the raised lines. The defect is particularly visible in solid-dyed fabrics and is nearly invisible in heavily printed or textured designs. Root causes include uneven pressure in calenders, sagging support in drying frames, inconsistent steam temperature across the chamber width, and inadequate or misaligned guide rollers that allow the cloth to drift sideways.

The term derives from the parallel rows that characterize the defect. In technical use, rowiness is sometimes grouped with other surface faults such as cockle and pucker, though it is distinct from them in origin and appearance. Mills assess rowiness severity on a scale from slight (barely perceptible) to heavy (sharply defined ridges that cannot be calendered out). Severely rowy fabric is typically downgraded or rejected rather than reworked.

Prevention depends on maintaining uniform tension, temperature, and support throughout each processing stage. Modern mills use edge guides, precision rollers, and real-time monitoring of nip pressure and steam distribution to minimize the risk. Batch quality and raw fiber consistency also influence susceptibility. Dyers and finishers who work with delicate or high-twist yarns must take particular care, as these materials are more prone to bunching under mechanical stress.
