A runround is a section of railway track, typically laid in a loop or figure-eight pattern, that sits alongside a main mine railway line. Its purpose is simple: to allow loaded or empty mine cars to change direction and return along the same track without requiring the locomotive or the cars themselves to reverse. In narrow working spaces underground, where a locomotive cannot easily maneuver or where reversing is mechanically inconvenient, the runround saves time and wear on equipment.

The track itself is standard gauge rail, usually laid to match the main line so that cars can move between them smoothly. A runround is often positioned at a loading point, a junction, or the end of a branch line where cars need to be turned around for the return journey. The simplest form is a single loop branching from and rejoining the main line; more complex arrangements use two parallel sidings connected at both ends, allowing multiple cars to pass or to be sorted by direction.

Mine operators prefer runrounds because they reduce the need for complex switching equipment and eliminate the operational hazard of reversing. A loaded car rolling backward downhill, or a locomotive backing up in poor visibility, represents risk; the runround avoids these situations. In the cramped, uneven floors of underground mines, the track geometry must be carefully graded and supported to prevent cars from rolling off or derailing at the junctions.

The term reflects its function and origin: a car runs around the loop rather than running round (turning) in place. It is British industrial language, still used in working mines and in the study of historical mining infrastructure. Modern operations with powered haul systems and better track layouts use them less frequently, but they remain standard in many small and medium-scale extractive operations where the layout of the working is irregular or space is constrained.
