A rapper is a hinged knocker suspended at a mine shaft collar, used to transmit coded messages between surface and underground. The operator swings it against a fixed anvil or bell to produce audible signals that travel down the shaft or echo through connecting passages. Each sequence of strikes carries a specific meaning: one tap might signal "hoist," two rapid taps "lower," three "stop." Before electric communication systems became standard, rappers were the only reliable way to coordinate cage movements with the banksman and underground crew.
The device consists of a weighted metal head, typically cast iron or wrought iron, hung from a short chain or rope attached to a frame mounted directly at the shaft opening. The operator stands beside it and pulls the rope or chain to swing the head against a stationary striking surface, usually a steel anvil bolted to timber or stone. The noise must carry clearly and distinctly; design variations focus on mass, strike angle, and anvil composition to cut through shaft noise and rival machinery.
Limitations and displacement
Rappers work only within audible range and depend on human interpretation at both ends. Underground in large collieries, noise from pumps, winding engines, and rockfall makes them unreliable. They also require both signaller and receiver to know the same code, and misunderstandings could mean idle equipment or dangerous cage movement. Most British and European collieries transitioned to bell systems, telephone wires, and electric signalling by the early twentieth century.
The term "rapper" itself reflects the device's simple action: it raps, or strikes sharply. Miners sometimes called the operator the rapper as well as the device itself. On smaller or older shafts, or in remote sites where electrical infrastructure was impractical, rappers persisted into the mid-twentieth century, outlasting their technical obsolescence because they were robust, required no power, and needed no maintenance beyond greasing the hinge.
