In mining, a trouble is a discontinuity or disturbance in a rock stratum that interrupts the orderly sequence of layers. This may be a fault, a zone of intense fracturing, a fold, or an intrusion of foreign material that cuts across the expected geology. Unlike a simple fault plane, a trouble often represents a more complex zone of deformation that can extend laterally for tens or hundreds of meters and vertically through multiple seams.

Troubles appear most commonly in coal mining, where they complicate extraction by breaking up a seam into disconnected sections or rendering material unminereable due to extreme fragmentation. A trouble may separate a seam into upper and lower benches that cannot be worked together, forcing operators to choose which portion to extract or to abandon the zone entirely. In metalliferous mining, troubles can similarly bisect ore bodies and complicate mine planning by creating barriers to continuity of extraction.

The practical consequence of a trouble depends on its width, orientation, and material composition. A narrow trouble of tightly cemented rubble might be worked through with additional costs in breaking and sorting. A wide trouble filled with clay gouge or soft material may be impassable to conventional mining methods and require either driving around it or leaving a protective pillar. Troubles often contain water, which can affect drainage and stability of nearby workings.

Detection and response are central to mine planning. Exploratory drilling, seismic surveys, and geological mapping ahead of the working face help identify troubles before extraction reaches them. Once encountered, the practical question becomes whether to penetrate the trouble or to abandon that section of mineral. The term itself is direct English: miners and mining engineers call such a zone a trouble because it troubles operations, complicates the mine plan, and raises costs.

Troubles are distinguished from simple faults by their broader zone of influence and their typically more chaotic internal structure. A fault may be a single shear plane a few centimeters thick; a trouble is usually measured in meters. The term is most entrenched in British and Commonwealth mining practice and appears less frequently in American technical literature, where the same feature might be called a horse, a crush zone, or a fault zone, depending on local usage and the specific character of the disturbance.
