In mining, a crop is the point where a vein, seam, or mineral deposit reaches the surface and becomes visible. It is an outcrop, but the term is used specifically for the exposed edge of an economically valuable deposit. A crop marks the upper limit of mineralization and often signals to prospectors and geologists where subsurface ore bodies may extend downward. The crop itself may be thin, weathered, or partially oxidized, but its presence is the starting signal for underground exploration.
Crops form over geological time as uplift, erosion, and weathering expose layers that were once buried. In coal mining, a crop is where a seam meets the surface; in metal mining, it is the exposed edge of a vein of copper, tin, lead, or gold. The crop's grade, thickness, and orientation provide crucial data about what lies below. Prospectors historically searched for crops as the first indicator of mineable reserves; a strong crop suggested a deep, continuous body worth developing.
The position and character of a crop influence mining strategy. A crop on a hilltop may be easily accessed but shallow; a crop in a valley may indicate a dip that carries ore deeper. Crops are frequently broken or displaced by faulting, which complicates the correlation between surface evidence and underground geometry. Weathering can also alter the crop's apparent composition, making assay work essential before development decisions are made.
The word crop comes from the agricultural sense: something that projects out or protrudes. In mining, the crop is what the earth has 'grown' upward through erosion. It is a passive discovery tool; modern exploration now relies on drilling, seismic surveys, and geochemistry to find blind deposits without surface crops. Yet recognizing a crop remains valuable in greenfield exploration and in understanding the structural architecture of known mining districts.
