Sanding gear is the mechanical system that applies fine sand or similar granular material to locomotive and rail vehicle wheels, particularly at the wheel-rail interface during wet, icy, or greasy track conditions. The equipment sits mounted on the locomotive frame, with hoppers, feed mechanisms, and delivery nozzles that direct material onto the rail head just ahead of the wheel, creating temporary traction where adhesion would otherwise fail.

Most sanding systems use compressed air to force sand from a heated hopper through flexible pipes down to nozzles positioned at the leading wheel trucks. The sand, typically screened to between 0.1 and 0.5 millimeters, creates a bond layer that increases the coefficient of friction between wheel and rail from as low as 0.05 on wet or icy steel to around 0.25 or better. Without it, a locomotive cannot grip the rail tightly enough to transmit driving torque or brake force, particularly during acceleration, hill climbing, or emergency braking.

The term itself comes directly from the function: grinding or granular material applied via a gear or delivery mechanism. In older usage, the equipment itself was called a sandbox, the hopper where sand was stored. Over time, "sanding gear" came to describe the entire working assembly, including valves, regulators, pipes, and nozzles that together make up the application system.

Operators control sanding application via a handle, lever, or switch in the cab, and can vary the flow and duration of application. Sand tends to contaminate the rail surface and wheel treads over time, so sanding is not continuous but deployed tactically during grades, poor weather, or low-adhesion rail conditions. If sand becomes damp inside the hopper, it cakes and clogs the delivery pipes, rendering the system useless when most needed.

Modern electric and hydraulic locomotives still carry sanding gear, though some operate cylinders, sand dryers, or improved nozzle arrangements to overcome older blockage issues. Freight and passenger services rely equally on functional sanding systems; brake fade or wheel slip without it can extend stopping distance dangerously or prevent a heavy train from moving on steep, wet track. The equipment is simple, mechanical, and critical to safe rail operation in variable weather.
