Seed corn is grain selected and stored after harvest specifically to be planted in the next growing season, rather than sold, milled, or consumed. A farmer reserves a percentage of the current year's yield, typically 5 to 15 percent depending on crop and region, and sets it aside under controlled conditions until spring planting. The practice is fundamental to grain farming: without retained seed, a farmer must purchase new seed annually, either from seed companies or grain merchants, at significant cost.
The kernels chosen for seed must meet basic standards. They should come from healthy plants free of disease, have adequate moisture content (usually 12 to 14 percent) for storage without rotting or sprouting, and show good germination when tested. Farmers historically selected seed by eye and hand, choosing full, unblemished kernels from the best-performing plants. Modern operations may run harvested grain through cleaners and graders to remove chaff, broken kernels, and lightweight material before storage.
Storage and condition
Seed corn must be kept dry and cool to maintain viability through winter and into spring. Moisture above 15 percent promotes fungal growth and mold; temperature fluctuations encourage dormancy loss and premature germination. Traditional storage used sealed bins, root cellars, or cribs with good ventilation. Contemporary farms typically store seed in climate-controlled facilities or apply chemical seed treatments (fungicides, insecticides, or inoculants) to guard against pest damage and disease in the soil at planting time.The term "seed corn" can refer literally to maize kernels retained for replanting, but the phrase also appears as a metaphor in business and technology, where it means resources or capital set aside for future growth rather than immediate return. In agricultural trade, however, it remains a practical category: seed corn is priced and bought differently than feed grain or milling corn, commanding a premium because of higher standards and the added cost of testing and treatment.
Hybrid corn, now dominant in commercial agriculture, complicates seed retention. Hybrids produce high-yielding seed once, from a controlled cross of two inbred lines, but seed saved from a hybrid plant does not breed true: offspring show reduced vigor and mixed traits. This drove farmers toward purchasing new seed annually. Open-pollinated and heritage varieties, by contrast, produce seed that breeds true and remain viable for retention, making them favored by seed-saving gardeners and farms practicing low-input or regenerative methods.
