Shattering is the natural dispersal of mature seeds from the seed head or pod as they ripen and dry. In cereals like wheat, barley, and oats, the rachis (the stem segment connecting florets to the main stalk) weakens and breaks, dropping individual grains to the ground. In legumes like soybeans and canola, the pod walls dry, shrink, and split open, ejecting seeds. This happens whether the farmer is ready or not, which is why it matters.
Timing is the core problem. A crop that shatters badly can lose 5 to 15 percent of yield before combine harvest simply because seeds fall into the stubble, soil, or between rows where they cannot be recovered. Shattering losses accelerate in windy conditions and worsen if harvest is delayed. A delay of just one week after physiological maturity can mean significant loss in high-shatter varieties.
Breeding for shatter resistance
Plant breeders have selected for tougher rachises in cereals and thicker pod walls in legumes to reduce shattering. Modern wheat and barley varieties typically shatter far less than old landraces or heritage cultivars. In canola, some newer lines retain pods better as they dry. Soybean breeding has produced lines with more tenacious pod attachment, though complete elimination is not practical since some shattering is normal.
Shattering is not entirely a flaw. In wild and feral populations, it is the primary seed dispersal mechanism, essential for survival and reproduction. Plant researchers sometimes exploit this trait in other contexts: intentional shattering of seed heads can be used to collect grain for small-scale or breeding work. The relationship between crop genetics and harvest logistics shapes variety selection across regions and seasons.
