slurry

Slurry is a pumpable mixture of animal manure, bedding material, water, and dissolved nutrients that accumulates in livestock housing and storage systems. It forms naturally as solid waste breaks down and mixes with urine, rain water, and cleaning washings. The consistency ranges from pourable (around 5 to 8 percent dry matter) to thick sludge (15 percent dry matter or more), depending on how much bedding and water are present and how long it has been stored.

Different livestock produces characteristically different slurries. Pig slurry tends toward a thinner consistency because pigs generate high urine volumes relative to bedding use; cattle slurry is often thicker where straw-based bedding dominates; poultry slurry is looser still. Each type carries different proportions of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, which affect its fertilizer value. Anaerobic bacteria break down organic matter during storage, generating methane and hydrogen sulfide gases, and converting some nitrogen to ammonia.

Slurry is stored in tanks or lagoons (often called slurry pits) constructed from concrete, brick, or plastic liners. Storage duration typically runs from several months to a full year to allow settling and pathogen reduction before field application. The longer the storage, the more nutrient content may be lost as gases escape, though properly sealed systems minimize this loss.

Application and practical concerns

Application relies on tankers equipped with pumps and spreader bars or trailing shoe mechanisms that deposit slurry directly onto grassland or before ploughing into arable soil. Surface spreading is cheaper but releases more ammonia to air; injected application (trailing shoe or shallow cultivation) retains more nitrogen in the soil. Timing and weather matter: application on frozen ground risks surface runoff; application before heavy rain can contaminate water courses. Odor and flies are persistent problems, particularly in warm weather and densely populated areas.

Slurry handling is heavily regulated in most jurisdictions because of water pollution and ammonia emission risks. Storage capacity must be sufficient to avoid field spreading during wet winters when soil cannot accept it. The term is often used attributively: pig slurry, cattle slurry, poultry slurry, each implying different handling and spreading protocols. Modern farms increasingly use slurry digesters to generate biogas before spreading the residue, which reduces odor and creates energy while maintaining most of the fertilizer value.
