A wrest is a flat or slightly curved metal plate mounted beneath the mouldboard of a plough, positioned to scour the bottom and sides of the furrow as the plough moves forward. Its primary function is to prevent soil, plant residue, and clay from accumulating and clogging the mouldboard, which would otherwise reduce the plough's cutting efficiency and require frequent stopping to clear blockages.
Early wrests were fashioned from wood, typically ash or elm, and were replaceable components that wore quickly in heavy clay soils. The shift to cast iron and later mild steel wrests came during the nineteenth century as plough manufacturers standardized their designs. Steel wrests could be bolted to the plough body and lasted considerably longer, though they still required replacement after sustained use in abrasive soil conditions containing sand or flint.
Design and soil interaction
The wrest's effectiveness depends on its profile and the angle at which it contacts the soil. A shallow angle helps lift debris away from the mouldboard, while too steep an angle creates resistance and requires additional draught force from the team or tractor. In sticky clay soils, a slightly concave wrest works better than a flat one, as the curved surface creates a self-cleaning action. Regional variations in soil type meant that plough users often adjusted or reshaped their wrests to suit local conditions.
The term is now largely historical in mechanized agriculture, superseded by modern plough designs that incorporate integral scouring surfaces and angled components. However, the principle remains embedded in contemporary ploughshares and skimmers, which perform similar soil-management functions. In heritage farming and conservation contexts, understanding the wrest's role helps explain why traditional ploughs required such careful maintenance and why soil conditions demanded specific tool configurations.
