It sits between minimum and medium within a tiered sizing system, though the actual dimensions vary wildly depending on what is being made. A small bearing is measured in millimeters; a small hydraulic press in tons; a small electric motor in kilowatts. Small has no fixed meaning across trades, only within a specific product line or industry standard.
The term serves a practical business function: it divides production into discrete SKUs that can be tooled, inventoried, and priced distinctly. Rather than offering continuous variation, manufacturers establish small as a fixed point in a stepped progression. This reduces complexity in mold design, dies, and changeover procedures. For instance, a fastener supplier might stock small, medium, and large variants of a common bolt diameter, each with its own part number and lead time, rather than accept custom orders for intermediate sizes.
Variants and Usage Conventions
Some industries use small as the entry level for general sale; others designate it as a mid-range option. Apparel manufacturers use small as a body size; food packaging uses small for a container volume; electrical enclosures use small for a footprint class. The only consistent feature is that small occupies a fixed position in a finite ladder of sizes. Occasionally an industry will skip small entirely, moving from extra-small or XS directly to medium, particularly where minimum viable product economics demand a larger starting point.
Problems arise when small is used informally without a reference standard. A supplier's small may not match a customer's small. Industry standards, such as those published by ISO or ANSI, occasionally define size bands numerically (for example, IEC motor frame sizes), but trade-specific conventions often remain unwritten. Purchase agreements must specify the exact dimensional range covered by small, not rely on the word alone. Damage and returns commonly stem from size miscommunication when a buyer assumes small means what it meant from a previous supplier.
The name itself reflects natural language: in ordinary speech, small means not large. Manufacturing adopted the term because it required no technical knowledge to communicate. It is neutral on material, function, or mechanism. A small press and a small bearing are unrelated objects sharing only the word.
