A train protection device that automatically stops a train if it attempts to pass a signal when the signal aspect and operating rules prohibit such movement, or (in some applications) if it attempts to pass at an excessive speed.

A train stop is a fixed wayside device that enforces signal compliance by mechanically or electrically stopping a locomotive if the driver attempts to pass a restrictive signal. The device sits alongside the track and engages with a trip cock or similar mechanism on the train itself, cutting power to the engine or applying the brakes. It is not a buffer or a derail, but a control system that treats signal violation as a critical failure and responds automatically, regardless of driver action.

Train stops exist in several operational forms. The mechanical trip stop, traditional on European railways, uses a physical arm that rises when a signal shows danger or caution; contact with the locomotive's trip gear mechanically trips an automatic brake valve, applying the train's pneumatic brakes. Electrical train stops use signaling circuits to de-energize the traction system or apply power to brakes when the train is in the wrong place at the wrong time. Some systems include speed-monitoring logic that triggers the stop if the train exceeds a permitted speed for a given track section or signal aspect.

How it fits into railway safety

Train stops function as a last line of defense against signal-passed-at-danger (SPAD) incidents. A driver distracted, incapacitated, or simply in error will run through a restrictive signal; the train stop acts without judgment, stopping the train before it can foul the adjacent track or collide with another train. The device tolerates no negotiation. It is fitted at absolute signals (danger signals that must never be passed) and at caution or restricted speed signals on busy passenger lines and in yards where the consequences of a SPAD are severe.

Maintenance of train stops is exacting. The trip arm or electrical contact must be free and correctly positioned; dirt, rust, or wear can prevent engagement. The locomotive's trip cock must also be in working order and properly mounted at the designed height. Periodic testing is mandatory: the device is cycled under load, and the braking response is measured. In electrified lines, the circuit must be verified for continuity and isolation.

Modern rail networks are moving toward continuous in-cab signaling and autonomous train protection (ATP) systems, which perform the function of the train stop in software rather than hardware. However, mechanical and electrical train stops remain in service on mainline and commuter railways worldwide, particularly where infrastructure investment for full ATP retrofit is not yet justified. The device has proved its worth; a functioning train stop has prevented countless potential accidents by simply refusing to allow the error to continue.
