A spale is a thin wooden crossbar clamped or nailed temporarily across frame members, typically during assembly, to hold them in correct alignment and spacing until permanent fastening is complete. In timber-frame construction and heavy joinery, spales function as assembly aids, maintaining precise angles and distances between posts, beams, or wall frames while the carpenter works on permanent connections like mortise-and-tenon joints or bolted plates.
Spales are usually made from softwood strips, roughly 1 to 2 inches thick and 3 to 6 inches wide, chosen for ease of removal rather than strength. They are positioned perpendicular to the frame members they are bracing, often on both faces of a frame to prevent racking (lateral twisting). The term is most common in North American timber framing and industrial structural work, where large frames must be held square during assembly of multi-member structures.
Installation and Removal
Spales are secured with nails, screws, or C-clamps, depending on the urgency and whether the frame will be moved before final assembly. The critical detail is that they must be removable without damaging permanent frame members or the joints being formed beneath them. A skilled carpenter positions spales where they will not interfere with final joinery, drilling, or welding. Removing them too early risks frame drift; leaving them too long can mean they must be cut away from hardened adhesive or encroaching permanent hardware.
In prefabrication shops and modern fabrication yards, spales have largely given way to hydraulic alignment systems, adjustable strongbacks, and modular clamping frames. However, they remain standard practice in on-site timber framing and in shops where traditional joinery methods are used. Their low cost, simplicity, and reversibility make them valuable for one-off or small-batch frame assembly where precision jigs are uneconomical.
The word likely derives from an older term for a thin wood splinter or chip; its use in framing probably dates to medieval timber construction, where this technique was the only practical way to hold large frames square during assembly.
