The letting of one timber into another by alternate scores or projections, as in shipbuilding; a crude form of dovetailing.

Tabling is a method of joining two pieces of timber by cutting alternate notches or projections into their facing surfaces, then interlocking them so the wood fibers support each other against lateral stress. In shipbuilding, it was the standard way to connect planking to frames and frames to keels before modern fastening. The joint works because each projection bears directly on the mating surface, and wood resists compression along the grain effectively.

The technique involves scoring or mortising both timbers with a series of rectangular cuts, typically spaced 12 to 18 inches apart depending on the timber section and expected loads. One timber receives protruding fingers; the other receives matching recesses. The pieces are then driven or fitted together so the fingers fully engage the sockets. Proper fit requires hand chiseling to achieve tight contact along the full depth of each joint segment.

Variants and application

Carpenters produced several forms: simple rectangular tabling for fore-and-aft joints, and stepped or angled tabling where planks met frames at compound angles. Shipwrights reserved it mainly for primary structural work, particularly where planking attached to frames and where the joint needed to resist both tensile and shear forces. The labor intensity meant it appeared less often in merchant work than in naval construction, where the superior strength justified the extra effort.

Tabling differs from dovetailing in that the projections are rectangular rather than trapezoidal, and the spacing is coarser. Unlike simple butt joints or lap joints, tabling distributes load across multiple bearing points, which slowed checking and splitting in large timbers exposed to seasonal moisture movement. Dried wood shrinks most along the growth rings; the intermittent contact of tabled joints accommodated this better than continuous surface gluing would have.

The term persists in modern timber framing and timber engineering literature, though the practice largely vanished after the 1920s as iron and steel fastenings became cheap and reliable. Shipwrights switching to riveted construction no longer needed the wood-to-wood mechanical interlock. Today tabling appears mainly in restoration of historic vessels and in traditional craft training, where it remains valued for its ability to work without metal fasteners and its transparency in allowing movement of the timber itself.
