A stickling is a propagation cutting taken from a parent plant at a stage when it has developed enough leaf and stem tissue to survive, but before it has become woody or fully mature. In nursery work, sticklings are typically 3 to 6 inches long, with at least two to four nodes (the points where leaves emerge), and are harvested when the stem still bends without snapping. The term applies mainly to deciduous and softwood cuttings used in commercial horticulture and plant propagation.
Growers take sticklings from healthy, disease-free stock plants during the active growing season, usually spring through early summer when new growth is tender but sufficiently firm. The cutting is made just below a node with a clean cut, leaves are stripped from the lower portion, and the cutting is then inserted into rooting medium, sand, peat, or perlite. Under the right conditions of humidity, temperature, and light, the stickling will develop callus tissue and roots within 2 to 8 weeks depending on the species.
Success factors and common failures
The critical window for stickling is narrow. Too young and the cutting lacks stored reserves; too old and the tissue becomes lignified and resistant to rooting. Moisture is essential, but waterlogging causes rot. Many propagators use mist systems or bottom heat to maintain humidity while allowing air circulation. Fungal damping-off is a frequent problem, particularly in overly wet conditions. Hormone rooting powders containing auxins are often applied to the cut surface to accelerate rooting initiation.
The terminology reflects practical observation: a stickling is literally a stick in the early stage of its life as an independent plant, distinct from a hardwood cutting (which is dormant and woody) or a herbaceous cutting (which is extremely soft and delicate). In some regions the term is used interchangeably with 'softwood cutting', though stickling often implies a slightly more advanced stage of development, caught between herbaceous and semi-hardwood.
Sticklings are the workhorse of commercial plant production for ornamentals, berries, and some fruit rootstocks. Their speed to rooting and high success rates when managed correctly make them more economical than seed propagation for many cultivars, particularly clones that must breed true. Understanding the physiology of the stickling stage, the species-specific timing, and the environmental controls required separates productive propagators from those who waste material and labor on poorly timed cuttings.
