A stretching course is a horizontal layer of bricks or stones laid with their long faces exposed to view on the wall surface. This is the most economical and visible masonry bond pattern, placing each unit so that its length runs parallel to the wall face rather than perpendicular through its thickness. The term comes from the stretching or lengthening of the wall appearance, since the long dimension dominates visually.

In brick construction, a stretching course appears as a simple grid of rectangular faces, typically 215 mm by 65 mm on English bond walls. In stone masonry, the visible length varies with the stone type and quarrying method, but the principle remains the same: the stone's longest dimension runs horizontally. A running bond wall consists entirely of stretching courses offset in a half-brick pattern for strength, while in English or Flemish bond, stretching courses alternate with heading courses, which show the stone's end grain and tie the wall thickness together.

The primary advantage of stretching courses is material and labour efficiency. Because the bricks or stones are positioned end-to-end rather than driven through the wall's full depth, a given length of wall requires fewer units. The disadvantage is reduced structural integrity if no header courses are used to lock the wall together laterally. A wall of stretching courses alone will fail in compression or shear across its thickness, which is why masonry codes require headers at regular intervals, typically every fifth or sixth course.

Stretching courses dominate the visible exterior of most brick and stone buildings because they produce the cleanest, most uniform aesthetic. The pattern is quick to execute, requires minimal cutting of units, and creates the formal appearance expected of quality masonry. Interior leaf walls in cavity construction are often entirely stretching courses, since lateral strength comes from the outer wythe or the cavity ties rather than through-bonding.

Repointing deteriorated stretching courses is common maintenance work. Unlike headers, which are less exposed to weather, the mortar in stretching courses receives direct rain impact and temperature cycling, causing joint failure. Historic buildings often show differential wear, with stretching courses needing repoint every 30 to 50 years depending on mortar strength, exposure, and brick porosity.
