A tailgate is a return airway, typically a tunnel or shaft driven parallel to the main working section of an underground mine, that carries stale or spent air away from the active mining face. While fresh air enters the mine through an intake shaft or drift, the tailgate collects air that has been heated, contaminated with dust, and depleted of oxygen by workers and equipment, directing it toward the surface or toward other exhaust routes. In coal mines especially, the tailgate is critical for managing methane and coal dust; in metal mines, it removes heat and noxious gases produced by blasting and diesel engines.
The tailgate differs from the main working gate or heading because it serves purely as a return path. In pillar-and-stall mining, the tailgate runs alongside the coal or ore being extracted, separated by a rib or pillar of solid material. In longwall operations, the tailgate is one of two main return routes, paired with a headgate, and air reverses direction as the longwall panel is worked. The distance between intake and tailgate affects ventilation pressure and air velocity; too short a circuit and air bypasses the face; too long and resistance builds, requiring larger fans.
Practical maintenance and risks
Tailgates accumulate dust, coal slack, timber props, and debris over time. Poor maintenance reduces airflow and can create pockets where methane pools or where spontaneous combustion of coal dust becomes possible. The tailgate must be kept clear and, in gassy mines, monitored for methane concentration. Falls of ground occur in tailgates as they age, and support (props, roof bolts, or cribbing) must be maintained even though no ore is being extracted there.
The term tailgate comes from the analogy to a gate at the tail end of a working: it is the gate through which air exits. In some regions, especially older British coal mining, the return route is also called the return heading or return air heading. The tailgate is a fundamental component of mine ventilation planning; regulations in most jurisdictions require a minimum of two separate return routes from any working area, a requirement that typically means at least one dedicated tailgate per section.
