A taphole is a carefully positioned opening in the lower section of a blast furnace through which molten iron or slag is drawn off during operation. In a typical blast furnace, tapholes sit 0.5 to 1.5 metres above the hearth floor and are arranged around the furnace shell at regular intervals, usually four to eight tapholes per furnace depending on production scale. Each hole serves a specific purpose: some drain iron to the casting house, others remove slag into separate ladles or runners.
The taphole itself is not a simple hole. It is lined with a clay or carbon-based refractory mixture, often clay-graphite composition, and plugged with a refractory stopper made from similar material. When tapping is needed, a worker uses a taphole rod (a long iron bar) to knock the stopper out and break through any cooled metal at the opening. Molten metal flows at temperatures around 1500°C, so the refractory lining must withstand thermal shock and chemical attack from both iron and slag repeatedly over months of continuous operation.
Maintenance of tapholes is a critical furnace task. The stopper material degrades with each tap; after several operations, the refractory lining itself begins to wear and enlarge. If a taphole becomes too large or its refractory lining fails, molten material can seep through the furnace wall uncontrollably, leading to dangerous breakouts and loss of production. Skilled taphole keepers monitor wear patterns and rebuild or reline holes during planned maintenance windows.
Slag versus iron tapping
Slag tapholes are usually positioned higher than iron tapholes because slag floats on the heavier molten metal. The slag hole allows operators to remove this byproduct (calcium silicates and other oxides) without disturbing the iron. Removing excess slag keeps the furnace running at stable thermal conditions and prevents slag from contaminating the iron product.The term comes directly from the verb 'to tap', meaning to draw off liquid from a container by opening a valve or breach. In older blast furnaces, tapholes were literally broken open by striking the stopper with a hammer; modern practice uses similar hand tools, though some large furnaces have begun automating the process with mechanical taphole systems. Despite automation advances, many furnace operations still rely on experienced tappers who judge timing and flow rate by sight and sound.
