In leveling work, the target is the sliding vane that moves up and down a graduated leveling staff (or rod). The surveyor or instrument operator positions it at a specific height, and the person holding the rod reads the staff graduation against the target's position. The target itself is typically a flat piece of metal or plastic, often painted in contrasting colors, with a horizontal reference line or central mark that aligns with the staff graduations.
The target slides freely on the staff and is held in place by friction or a gentle clamp, allowing quick adjustment without permanent fastening. Most targets feature a window or cutout that lets the instrument operator see the staff markings through them. On many precision staffs, the target incorporates a vernier scale for reading finer measurements than the main staff graduations alone would allow, typically to tenths of a millimeter or hundredths of a foot.
Common variants and setup
Surveyors working with hand level or dumpy level typically use a target staff with the vane set and held manually by the rod person. Self-reading staffs, used with automatic or digital levels, eliminate the need for a separate operator to call out heights. The target's marking system varies: some use horizontal lines at every centimeter or tenth of a foot, others use E-shaped symbols where the graduations create a pattern that is clearer when viewed through a telescope at distance.
Accurate leveling depends on the target being clean and properly positioned. A target left smudged, bent, or loose will introduce reading errors. On longer sightlines, parallax becomes a concern: the operator must keep eye position steady relative to the telescope to ensure the crosshair truly bisects the target. Atmospheric shimmer and staff sag (in very long sightings) compound the difficulty of reading an exact height.
The term target reflects its function: it is the thing being aimed at and read, much like a surveyor's target in other contexts. In older practice, before graduated staffs became standard, surveyors used physical targets at known heights to establish sight lines. The modern sliding target is a direct descendant of that principle, adapted for precise height measurement rather than mere sighting.
