tarmac: the asphalt parking and taxiing area at an airport
The tarmac is the hard-surfaced apron, taxiway, or holding area where aircraft are positioned when not on the runway. It is the working pavement of an airport, separate from the active runway itself, used for parking, towing, fueling, servicing, and ground movement. Most tarmacs are surfaced with asphalt or concrete and are designed to support the weight of loaded commercial and military aircraft without deformation.
Aviation maintenance crews spend most of their time on the tarmac. Aircraft are towed or taxi under their own power to designated parking spots, called stands or gates, where mechanics access the airframe, engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components. The tarmac also serves as the space where ground service vehicles, including fuel trucks, catering trucks, and baggage loaders, operate around parked aircraft.
The term comes literally from tarmacadam, a surfacing method using tar and crushed stone. Although modern airport pavements often use Portland cement concrete rather than tar-bound surfaces, the colloquial name persists across the aviation industry, particularly in informal speech among ground crews and maintenance technicians. In formal airport documentation, the area is more precisely called the apron or the ramp.
Tarmac conditions matter directly to safety and scheduling. Cracks, potholes, or soft spots can damage nose gear or create hydraulic line ruptures during towing. Rain pooling on poorly maintained tarmac can hide holes and complicate vehicle movement. Thermal stress from temperature swings, heavy aircraft loads, and jet blast from thrust reversers all cause degradation that requires regular inspection and patching.
The tarmac is also a regulatory boundary. Once an aircraft leaves the tarmac under its own power or tow, it enters the controlled taxiway system with specific routing and traffic separation rules. The tarmac itself is managed by ground operations, not by air traffic control, though coordination between the two is constant during busy periods.
