Teleoperation, or teleop, is the real-time remote control of a machine or robot from a distance. An operator sits at a control station, receives video and sensor feedback, and sends commands that move the robot's actuators, gripper, or end effector. The connection is usually a network, whether wired, wireless, or satellite, with latency measured in milliseconds to seconds depending on distance and infrastructure.
Teleop emerged as essential in industries where human presence is dangerous or impossible: underwater inspection at depth, nuclear facility decommissioning, hazmat cleanup, and space exploration. In manufacturing, it bridges the gap between fully automated systems and human intuition, letting an operator handle unexpected parts or complex assembly tasks from a safe distance. Construction and mining use teleop for equipment operating in unstable or toxic environments.
Latency and Control Architecture
The quality of a teleop system depends heavily on feedback loop latency. In industrial settings, latency under 100 milliseconds allows smooth, intuitive control. Beyond 500 milliseconds, the operator must compensate by predicting movement and slowing actions. Subsea teleop may operate with latencies of 1 to 2 seconds, requiring the operator to work deliberately and trust the robot to follow through. High latency systems often use overlays, predictive models, and force feedback to make operation tractable.
Teleop control can be direct (joystick or haptic interface maps 1:1 to robot motion) or mapped (where operator commands are translated through software layers). Modern systems increasingly use shared autonomy, where the robot handles basic obstacle avoidance and stabilization while the operator provides higher-level direction. This reduces operator fatigue and improves precision over distance.
The equipment supporting teleop spans from simple wireless transmitters on small aerial drones to robust industrial systems with redundant communications, force-feedback haptic gloves, stereoscopic video, and multi-axis motion platforms at the control station. Cost scales with bandwidth demand, latency tolerance, and safety criticality. A subsea inspection teleop rig may cost millions; a construction crane's remote pendant costs thousands.
