A telephone exchange is the central facility where telephone lines converge and where connections between calling parties are established. In its simplest form, it is a switching mechanism, either manual or automatic, that routes incoming calls to outgoing lines. The exchange sits at the hub of a telephone network, receiving signals from subscriber lines and directing them to their destinations through a matrix of electrical paths.
Manual exchanges, operated by switchboard attendants from the early 1900s through much of the twentieth century, used plug-and-jack systems. An incoming call would light a lamp on the switchboard, the operator would answer it, learn the desired destination number, and physically insert a plug into a socket corresponding to that line. Automatic exchanges eliminated the human element by using electromechanical devices, most commonly the step-by-step selector (also called Strowger switch) or the crossbar switch. These machines responded directly to the pulses or tones generated by a telephone dial or keypad, routing the call without operator intervention.
Modern telephone exchanges are digital systems implemented as computer-controlled switching matrices. Digital exchanges sample voice signals thousands of times per second, convert them to binary data, and transmit them through digital pathways, allowing multiple conversations to share the same physical wire through time-division multiplexing. A contemporary exchange may handle tens of thousands of simultaneous calls while also managing supplementary services like call forwarding, conference calling, and call waiting.
Exchanges are hierarchically organized. A local exchange serves a defined geographic area, typically a town or city district, connecting residential and business subscribers. Tandem exchanges connect multiple local exchanges to each other, forming a regional network. International exchanges, or gateway switches, handle calls crossing national boundaries. Each exchange is identified by its area code and exchange code (the first three digits of a seven-digit North American phone number).
The physical infrastructure of an exchange includes switching equipment, transmission lines, signaling apparatus, and backup power systems. Reliability is critical: exchanges must maintain service during power failures using battery banks and diesel generators. Older mechanical exchanges were robust but slow, taking up to a second to complete a connection. Modern digital exchanges complete connections in fractions of a second and can diagnose faults automatically. The term 'exchange' itself reflects the original function: the mutual exchange of electrical paths between two remote parties seeking to communicate.
