tokenless block

A type of signalling system on a single-track line which dispenses with the need for a train to carry a token (physical object exchanged between drivers and signalmen).

A tokenless block system is a method of controlling train movements on single-track railway lines using fixed signals and interlocking logic rather than physical tokens. On single-track sections, only one train is permitted between two points at any time; traditionally this was enforced by requiring a driver to carry a token (a physical brass or steel tablet or staff) handed over by the signalman. Tokenless block replaces this mechanical handover with an electrical or mechanical signalling arrangement that prevents conflicting train movements through automatic signal operation and locking.

The system relies on a series of signal posts and track circuits or mechanical interlocks positioned along the line. When a train enters a single-track section, signals ahead automatically lock to danger, preventing another train from entering until the first train clears the section and the signals reset. The absence of a physical token eliminates delays in handing over the device and removes the risk of human error in token management, such as a driver leaving a station without one or a token being given to the wrong train.

Variants and Implementation

Tokenless block systems vary widely depending on the era of installation and the railway's infrastructure. Early versions used mechanical lever frames and track circuits; modern implementations employ solid-state electronics and computer-based interlocking. Some railways adopt absolute block rules where each signal section is strictly controlled, while others use permissive block arrangements allowing cautious movement past signals at danger under specific conditions. The system is most common on branch lines, rural routes, and heritage railways where traffic density is low and justifies the lower cost compared to double-track operation.

Tokenless block is particularly valuable on lines with infrequent or irregular train services where token exchange at passing loops would create operational friction. Because signals control access directly, a driver cannot inadvertently enter a section already occupied. The system still requires clear communication between signalmen at each end of the block section, typically by telephone or bell codes, to confirm that trains are safe to proceed.

The term distinguishes this method from the token block or token working systems it replaced. While tokenless block improves operational safety and eliminates certain classes of error, it does depend on functioning signal mechanisms and electrical supplies; failure of interlocking equipment can require manual operation or a service suspension. This trade-off between mechanical simplicity and electrical dependency has shaped its adoption, with many routes retaining token working well into the modern era for reasons of cost and reliability.
