A trunk line is a primary railway route engineered and operated to carry high volumes of traffic between major cities or terminals. It forms the structural backbone of a rail network, connecting important economic centers and serving as the principal through-route for both passenger and freight traffic. Trunk lines typically carry 100 to 400 trains per day depending on the network, with track geometry and signaling designed for speed and capacity rather than local stopping patterns.

Trunk lines are distinguished by heavier rail weight (often 60 kg/m or more), more robust track bed construction, and more generous curvature and gradient standards than branch or secondary lines. On freight networks, trunk lines often feature continuous welded rail and modern automatic block signaling to maximize throughput. Passenger trunk lines may operate at speeds of 120 to 320 km/h, requiring track maintenance cycles measured in weeks rather than months. A single trunk line can be 300 to 1500 kilometers in length, running continuously between major nodes without significant deviation for local pickup.

Variants and infrastructure demands

Different regions develop trunk lines suited to their freight patterns. In coal and mineral-exporting countries, trunk lines are built with shallow gradients (under 0.5% on major sections) and long sidings to accommodate heavy freight. In passenger-dominant networks, trunk lines prioritize level crossings elimination and tight schedule tolerance. Double or quadruple-track trunk lines exist in high-traffic corridors; single-track trunk lines with passing loops remain common in lower-density networks.

Maintenance of trunk lines is highly scheduled and centralized, often coordinated nationally or by regional operator. Worn rail sections are replaced or head-hardened at specific intervals. Ballast is renewed and compacted on fixed cycles. Unlike secondary lines, which may see deferred maintenance during economic downturns, trunk lines are treated as critical infrastructure and their condition directly affects the operator's commercial performance and punctuality metrics.

The term originates from the analogy to tree anatomy: the trunk is the main stem from which branches diverge. In rail networks, trunk lines receive branch lines and sidings but do not themselves branch or terminate except at major junctions. This hierarchical terminology persists because it clearly describes the functional role: all traffic flows either onto or off a trunk line via secondary connections, never across it except at purpose-built interchange points.
