train mile
A unit used in estimating railway running expenses, etc.: the total number of miles run by all the trains of a railroad, or system of railroads, as within a given time, or for a given expenditure.
train mile: total distance all trains run in a period
A train mile is the sum of all distances traveled by every train operated by a railroad or system during a specific period, typically one year. If a railroad operates ten trains over a 100-mile route in a single day, that accounts for 1,000 train miles. The unit aggregates movement across the entire fleet to give a single figure for operational scale and comparison.
The metric appeared most heavily in railroad accounting from the late nineteenth century through the mid-twentieth century. Managers used train miles to allocate maintenance costs, fuel consumption, and labor hours across different routes and service types. A branch line might cost $0.50 per train mile to operate, while a main line might cost $0.35; multiplying each line's train miles by its unit cost yielded true operating expenses for budgeting and rate-setting.
Train miles differ from track miles, which measure the physical length of rail owned. A single track mile might carry dozens of train miles monthly if traffic is heavy. They also differ from revenue miles, which count only the distance traveled while carrying paying passengers or freight; empty return runs, light engine movements, and yard operations all count toward train miles regardless of revenue generation.
Calculation required knowing dispatch records, speed, consist weight, and sometimes fuel or water stops. A transcontinental express might run 2,500 train miles monthly; a short switching engine in a rail yard might accumulate 50 train miles daily. The figure was most useful when comparing railroads of similar geography and traffic profile, because geography, grades, weather, and signaling practice varied the cost per train mile considerably.
The term has become less common as railroads adopted more granular cost accounting linked to specific origin-destination pairs and real-time fuel and labor data. However, it persists in historical analysis of nineteenth and early-twentieth century railroads, where it appears in annual reports and in scholarly work on operational economics and the economics of consolidation.
