triage: where freight trains get sorted and rebuilt

In rail operations, triage is a marshalling yard where incoming freight trains are broken apart, their cars sorted by destination and commodity type, and then reassembled into outbound trains. The term comes from the French verb trier, to sort. A triage receives a mixed consist of wagons that may be headed to dozens of different locations and industries. Rather than run each car individually to its destination, the yard groups cars bound for the same route into new trains, improving efficiency and reducing empty running.

The physical layout of a triage follows a standard pattern. Arrival sidings hold incoming trains. A hump, either gravity-fed or powered, breaks the consist: each car is uncoupled and allowed to roll down into classification sidings arranged by destination, route, or commodity. Modern triages use retarders, hydraulic or pneumatic brakes mounted in the rails, to control rollout speed and prevent damage. A typical mid-size triage might have thirty to sixty classification sidings, each long enough to hold 50 to 150 cars. Departure sidings at the far end hold the rebuilt trains until they have enough cars to depart economically.

The work is labour-intensive and hazardous. Shunters walk the tracks, coupling and uncoupling cars by hand, reading way-bills and directing movements. Rail workers must know the route network, commodity hazards, and weight limits. A single mistake, miscoupling, a car in the wrong consist, or a bad brake setting, can cause derailment, collision, or dangerous spillage if hazardous goods are involved. Weather compounds the risk: ice on the hump makes cars unpredictable, and fog obscures signals and movement.

Triage versus other yards

A triage differs from a simple passing loop or siding. It is a dedicated facility with infrastructure, permanent staff, and the capacity to handle frequent, large-scale sorting. Smaller yards may perform light shunting or wagon storage but lack the hump and classification sidings that define a true triage. Very large freight networks operate multiple triages, each handling traffic on different routes or serving different industries. High-speed or passenger railways rarely use humps; their operations focus on through-running rather than composition changes.

The rise of containerisation and intermodal transport has changed triage operations. Many modern yards now process unit trains of containers stacked on wagons, reducing the need for individual car sorting. Nevertheless, conventional triages remain essential on networks carrying varied, single-wagon freight: coal, ore, stone, timber, and general goods. A triage is expensive to build and maintain but essential for network efficiency on lines with high tonnage and mixed traffic types.
