In ceramics production, a trial is a controlled test of a new glaze, clay body, firing schedule, or equipment setup before committing to full-scale production. Unlike laboratory tests done in isolation, a trial runs material and processes through the actual production line, or significant portions of it, to catch interactions that bench work misses. A trial might involve mixing a new glaze recipe at production scale, loading it into a kiln with standard bisque ware, and firing under normal conditions to observe results.
Trials serve multiple purposes depending on what is being validated. When a raw material supplier changes, trials confirm the new shipment behaves identically to the old one across plasticity, drying rate, and fired strength. When a decorator designs a new underglaze pattern or overglaze application, trials reveal whether the design workflow integrates with existing equipment without slowing throughput. When kiln repairs are completed or a kiln is new, a trial run establishes baseline firing curves and identifies dead zones or unexpected temperature stratification before product destined for customers enters the chamber.
Scale and cost of trials
A small trial might fire a single shelf or setter loaded with test pieces alongside regular production. Medium trials occupy perhaps half a kiln chamber or one dedicated firing. Large trials treat a full production run as experimental, usually when switching clay bodies or overhauling glaze chemistry across a product line. Material cost of a trial is usually absorbed in scrap or seconds; labor is significant because trials demand observation, measurement, and documentation that routine production does not.Common failures caught in trials include crawling or crazing in glazes, warping due to uneven loading or air currents, color shifts from impurities in new raw materials, and batch-to-batch inconsistency from moisture or age in stored blends. Trials also expose equipment problems: a kiln element nearing failure will show hot spots; a spray booth reconfiguration may cause glaze buildup on ware; a new clay extruder may compress air pockets that bloat during firing.
The term trial reflects the ceramic industry's historical reliance on empirical testing. Unlike metals or plastics, fired ceramics cannot be reliably predicted from material composition alone because chemistry, mineral crystal structure, and kiln atmosphere all interact. A glaze that performs flawlessly at one plant may craze at another if kiln cooling curves differ by ten degrees per minute. Trials are the standard hedge against this uncertainty. Large producers run trials weekly; smaller operations trial less often but still treat major recipe or equipment changes as non-negotiable test events before production release.
