A trial balloon is a small, lightweight balloon launched ahead of a manned ascent to sample wind speed and direction at altitude. Before modern meteorological instruments and radio telemetry, it was the practical way to know what conditions awaited a pilot or observer in a larger balloon. The trial balloon rises freely, carrying nothing but its own envelope and perhaps a small weight or marker, allowing ground crew to track its drift and drift rate across the sky.

The method relies on visual observation from the ground. Crew members watch the small balloon's trajectory through binoculars or the naked eye, noting how far it drifts downwind and how quickly it climbs. By timing its ascent and measuring the horizontal displacement at different altitudes, they could infer wind direction and speed at those heights. The trial balloon typically used paper or silk envelopes about 1 to 3 meters in diameter, far smaller than a crewed observation or transport balloon which might be 20 meters or more across.

In practice, trial balloons were launched 10 to 20 minutes before a manned ascent. If winds aloft proved too strong or erratic, the pilot could cancel or delay the flight. If conditions looked favorable, the larger balloon would proceed. This was especially important for long-distance balloon racing or for observation work that required stable flight at a particular altitude. A pilot caught in strong shear or a downdraft while ascending in a large, unwieldy envelope risked collision with terrain or uncontrolled descent.

The term has survived in common usage, now meaning any preliminary test or cautious public gesture intended to gauge reaction before committing to a major action. A government agency might release a trial balloon policy proposal to test public opinion; a corporation might trial balloon a price increase in one market region. The metaphor endures because the original procedure was exactly that: send something small and expendable aloft first, watch what happens, then decide whether to risk something larger.

Modern aviation has rendered the physical trial balloon obsolete. Radiosonde balloons and weather radar now provide precise wind data at all altitudes in minutes. Pilots rely on METAR reports, TAF forecasts, and real-time wind shear alerts from air traffic control. Yet the practice left its mark on the language of risk assessment and decision-making across many industries, far beyond the balloon envelope.
