triple: three-cylinder steam engine for heavy hauling
A triple is a steam locomotive or stationary engine with three cylinders arranged to drive a common crankshaft or set of wheels. The term comes from the number of pistons and cylinders, each receiving steam and converting its pressure into mechanical work. Triples were built primarily in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for hauling freight and passengers where extra power was needed without increasing boiler size or fuel consumption beyond practical limits.
The three cylinders are typically positioned one in the center (above the frame) and two outside (flanking the crankshaft). This arrangement distributes the driving force more evenly than a two-cylinder engine and smooths out the power delivery across the full rotation of the crankshaft. Steam enters each cylinder in sequence through a valve mechanism timed by the locomotive's motion, ensuring that at least one piston is always pushing down. The result is less vibration and more sustained pulling force than compound engines of similar boiler capacity.
Why triples fell out of use
Triples required more maintenance than simpler engines because three cylinders meant three sets of valve gear, three crossheads, and more linkages to keep in adjustment. A single bent valve rod or misaligned eccentric could throw the whole engine out of balance. As diesel locomotives became standard from the 1930s onward, the complexity and labor cost of triple maintenance made them uneconomical, and new construction stopped almost entirely by 1950.
In stationary mill engines and pumping engines, triples found longer use because they could run continuously at moderate speed without the frequent start-stop stress that wore out valve gear quickly. Some industrial plants operated triples into the 1970s. The term itself is now mostly historical; no triples have been built for commercial service in over 70 years, though preserved examples still operate at heritage railways and museums.
