twill: diagonal weave that builds strength into cloth

Twill is a weave structure in which weft threads pass over two or more warp threads, then under one, creating a visible diagonal line across the fabric. Unlike plain weave, where threads alternate one over, one under, twill's stepped pattern produces ridges that run at 45 degrees to the selvedge. This offset interlacing binds the cloth more tightly, making twill fabrics denser and more durable than their plain-woven equivalents.

The diagonal ridge in twill is not a surface embellishment but a mechanical consequence of the weaving sequence. As each row of weft advances the interlacing point by one thread, the eye perceives a continuous slanted line. The angle and prominence of these lines depend on yarn diameter, thread count, and the ratio of over-under passes. A 2/1 twill (two over, one under) produces a steeper diagonal than a 3/1. The direction can run left or right depending on threading, and fabrics are often identified by their twill angle: a 45-degree line is standard.

Twill appears across a range of industrial and consumer textiles. Heavy-duty work wear, denim, and cotton canvas all rely on twill weaves because the structure resists tearing and fraying better than plain weave. The same principle holds for linen, wool, and synthetic yarns. In technical textiles, twill is used in composites and reinforced fabrics where the diagonal interlacing distributes stress more evenly across the material. Satin weave, often confused with twill, creates a smoother face by using longer float passes and serves different ends, typically appearance rather than strength.

The tight structure that gives twill its strength can work against it in certain conditions. The diagonal bias creates an area of inherent weakness along the twill line itself; fabric may tear preferentially along this path if stressed. Twill also absorbs and releases moisture unevenly along the diagonal, leading to uneven shrinkage in natural fibers. Proper finishing and pre-shrinking are essential for apparel and upholstery to prevent the fabric relaxing and losing its crisp definition after washing or use.

The name twill derives from the Old English twill, meaning twofold or double, referring to the double interlacing pattern. The term has been stable in English for at least 500 years and appears consistently across weaving traditions. In mill work, twill is categorized by thread count (density), fiber content, and weight, usually expressed in ounces per square yard for apparel or grams per square meter for technical grades. Mills specify twill by its ratio and direction so that purchasers receive consistent fabric for their end use.
