twit: a fiber knot that stops the spindle

A twit is a knot, snarl, or tangled mass that forms in raw fiber or spun yarn during the carding or spinning process. The defect catches and jams in the machinery, halting production until cleared. In textile mills, especially those working cotton or wool, a single twit could lock a spindle or loom for minutes, making it a costly interruption in high-volume operations.

The term is archaic but still understood by older mill workers and in historical textile documentation. It derives from the verb twitter, meaning to twist or turn rapidly, capturing the notion of fibers wound tightly and irregularly. The name reflects the practical frustration: the fiber seems to twitch and tangle rather than flow smoothly through the machine.

Twits arise during preparation of the raw fiber or during early stages of the twist. Matted sections in raw cotton, felted patches in wool, or excessive static causing fibers to cling to each other can all create twits. Poor carding, where the fiber should be opened and aligned, is a common culprit. Humidity and temperature swings in the mill also encourage fiber clustering.

Once a twit enters the draw frame or spinning frame, it will not pass cleanly through the drafting rollers. Instead of being drawn into an even thread, it bunches, creating a thick, irregular lump. If the spindle or roving frame is running at speed when a twit hits, the sudden resistance can snap the thread or stall the machinery.

Modern mills use electronic fiber-monitoring systems that would have made the twit a quaint memory, but in small workshops and historical reproduction facilities, manual inspection for twits remains part of the preparatory labor. The existence of the term in technical literature underscores how persistent and costly the problem was in the pre-automation era.
